Shell Shuts Off Production From Bonga Field After an Attack

06-19-2008

The Anglo-Dutch oil company Shell has halted production at its Bonga oil platform off the Nigerian coast. The decision was prompted by an attack on a floating storage facility and a supply vessel early on Thursday morning.

There have been no reports about possible victims. The Bonga field is important to Shell, as it produces about 200,000 barrels of oil a day.

Nigeria's oil industry is often attacked by rebels demanding a larger share of oil revenues for the local population. This is the first time that the rebels have attacked an offshore oil facility.
