Lonestar Drilling Company's Workers Kidnapped in Nigeria

05-24-2008

Two foreign oil workers were seized by unidentified gunmen in Nigeria's southeastern Rivers State on Friday afternoon.

Rita Inoma-Abbey, spokesperson for Rivers State police, told the media in Port Harcourt, the capital city of the state, that the two workers were working for Nigeria-based Lonestar Drilling Company as the incident took place near the town of Omoku.

It is reported that one of the workers was a Pakistani and the other was from Malta.

Since the beginning of 2006, more than 200 foreigners have been kidnapped in Nigeria's restive Niger Delta region, the oil producing area of the Africa's former No. 1 oil producer, now second in place because of the numerous attacks by the militants.

The rampant kidnappings and attacks on oil facilities derailed oil producing activities. Nigeria's oil daily crude production used to stand at 2.6 million barrels, comparing with about 1.8 million barrels at present.
