Tullow Oil to Build Mini-Refinery and Power Plant in Uganda

03-22-2008

Tullow Oil, the U.K. explorer with the most drilling licenses in Africa, will cooperate with Norway's Jacobsen Elektro on a power plant project in Uganda.

Tullow plans to build a 4,000-barrel-a-day mini-refinery and an 85-megawatt power plant in Uganda when it begins producing oil in the East African nation next year.

``We will be focusing on the production'' of oil and gas in Lake Alberta region, Tullow Chief Operating Officer Paul McDade said on a conference call. ``Our partner will be focusing on power generation and power transmission.''

Uganda produces 145 megawatts of power at its two hydropower plants, out of an installed capacity of 380 megawatts, and generates 100 megawatts of thermal power. The power produced by Tullow will feed into the national grid.
