PetroSA Announced 20m barrels From Sable OilField

South Africa 02-06-2007
PetroSA, a South African national oil company, from its oilfield, Sable has successfully produced 20 million barrels of crude oil in the month of January 2007.

The oilfield is one of only two oilfields in South Africa - both operated by PetroSA. The Sable oilfield consists of two reservoirs - E-BD and E-CE - and boasts a novel feature where produced gas is re-injected into the E-CE reservoir.

The gas will be utilized as feedstock at a later stage via the South Coast Gas Project pipeline to the PetroSA Gas To Liquids (GTL) plant in Mossel Bay, PetroSA said. The field is produced via the Glas Dowr production facility, a turret- moored Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessel, which has its own crude oil storage tanks. The crude oil is periodically transported to a South African port via the shuttle tanker "Rita Knutsen" which also serves the Orca oil production facility, approximately 25km from the Sable oilfield.

The Glas Dowr has an excellent safety record, with more than 920 days - two and a half years - worked without a Lost Time Injury. "The milestone marks a significant achievement for PetroSA for achieving the projected guaranteed oil production when we embarked on the project. "Due to favourable oil prices, we are now able to explore further oil production opportunities from the Sable oilfield and continue to contribute to reduce crude oil imports for South Africa," said Sipho Mkhize, President and CEO of PetroSA.
